Disasters and Conflicts

The Mutarara-Sena area is located in Mozambique, on the north bank of the Zambezi River. Following a long period of war between 1961 to 1992who affected negatively agriculture, the region is also affected by slash-and-burn agriculture and flooding.Slash-and-burn agriculture is a method of cultivation in which vegetation is burned and cleared for planting. However, after several years of practice, fertility declines, weeds increase, soil erode and water salinization arise. The Zambezi River flooding also affects agriculture in the region. The river floods annually during the rainy season, which can cause damage to cropsand infrastructure, but at the same time increases the fertility of soils. In 20001, severe flooding caused significant damage to crops in the region as canbe seen in 2001 images.
